BETWEEN PAGES AND SCREENS: TRENDS AND FACTORS SHAPING READING HABITS IN PERU
Main Article Content
Abstract
Digitalization is reshaping reading habits through the parallel use of digital and print formats. In Peru, this shift is taking place in a context marked by low reading comprehension and a pronounced digital divide. The study aimed to identify trends and factors influencing reading practices in Peru during 2022, using a cross-sectional descriptive design and a quantitative approach. Data from 43,856 participants in the National Reading Survey were analyzed, applying descriptive statistics and the chi-square test. The results showed a predominance of physical formats at the national level (65.9% in the Coast, 63.4% in the Amazon, 57.6% in the Highlands). By contrast, digital-only reading showed minimal uptake (2.8%–5.4%). At the same time, mixed-format reading was identified as an emerging pattern, with the highest level in the Highlands (21.8%). A significant association was also observed between educational level and format preference (p < 0.001). Overall, the digital transformation of reading in Peru is uneven. Public policy is therefore needed to promote critical digital literacy and to design pedagogical strategies that strengthen mixed-reading models.
